A perfect match for hunger relief

48 million people in the U.S. live with hunger every day. That stark reality hits close to home. As Wisconsin children headed back to school this month, hunger remains higher than usual because of the continued effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Children who go to school without a proper breakfast often have difficulty focusing on their education, staying alert, and generally performing well.

There is relief in sight. As it happens, September is national Hunger Action Month, established by Feeding America back in 2008, launching a nationwide push to get involved with the hunger crisis across the country.

Two funds within the Community Foundation are providing a $15,000 match opportunity for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. The Schmerein Family Fund and the Heaney Family Fund each provided $7,500 toward the match, which means anyone donating to the matching gift campaign can double their impact through the end of September.

“Kids who are hungry struggle to learn, grow, and thrive, and this matching gift opportunity helps to fuel young bodies and minds,” says Patti Habeck, president and CEO, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
Habeck says every dollar donated equals six nutritious meals.
