Annual nonprofit workshop offers strategic tool

Maps — used properly — lead us to a desired destination. On Oct. 4, area nonprofit leaders will be taught how to use a matrix map to get their organizations to the financial viability they desire.

“Pursuing Nonprofit Sustainability: Using the Matrix Map to Make Strategic Decisions” will begin with registration and continental breakfast  at 8 a.m. and run until 3 p.m., at the Bridgewood Resort Hotel & Conference Center, 1000 Cameron Way, Neenah. The annual nonprofit training event is sponsored by the Community Foundation, United Way Fox Cities, the Nonprofit Leadership Initiative and Schenk.

The day of training by Steve Zimmerman, a CPA from Spectrum Nonprofit Services in Milwaukee, will teach nonprofit staff and board members to use a matrix map — a visual leadership guide for making decisions that drive exceptional impact in a financially viable manner. Zimmerman promises participants will leave with a tool they can immediately use to engage their staffs and boards in a course of action that will bring sustainability to their nonprofits.

He says that at the conclusion of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the concepts of sustainability, the nature of nonprofit business models and how their activities work together to create a sustainable organization.
  • Be able to analyze your business model and articulate the strategic inquiries to strengthen it based on the matrix map.
  • Complete a draft matrix map and identify preliminary strategic inquiries to strengthen your organization’s business model.

Nonprofit staff members are advised to bring along at least two or three of their board members, with more being better.
