Sole Burner returns May 11 to raise funds to fight cancer

When I was in middle school, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Me and my mom

I can still recall the mornings she would come into my bedroom to play with my hair as she lost hers. I remember the fear and uncertainty, but most of all, I remember the strength in her eyes — how brave she faced every day, and how important her community was in overcoming her battle.

My mom is my driving force to create change and to continue fighting cancer every day! Cancer in one way or another impacts most of us, and there is so much that we can do to make a difference.

One way is to participate in this year’s American Cancer Society Sole Burner 5K, back again for its 42nd year!  We anticipate the May 11 event in Appleton is going to be tremendously successful and impactful for our community.

There’s still time to be part of the Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. The Community Foundation will have a team participating again and we hope you join us! Special thanks to the George & Gussie Balck and Arthur & Mary Leske Fund within the Community Foundation for being one of our major sponsors.

The money raised from the event not only funds research but also helps the community by providing programs to support and make life easier for those battling cancer.

In Wisconsin, the American Cancer Society helps our community find answers and resources, whether they want to understand their diagnosis and treatment options, how to cope with side effects, or find transportation or a place to stay when treatment is far from home. The American Cancer Society strives to be side by side with our community members who are fighting cancer every step of the way.

Joining or donating to the Sole Burner 5K is just one way we can all rally together to help our community. The funds from this event go directly to the mission of the American Cancer Society here in Wisconsin. Last year, the American Cancer Society provided 474 rides to and from treatment for Wisconsin residents, more than 2,500 calls answered through our 24/7 support line, $171,000 rewarded in lodging and transportation grants for Wisconsin patients, and an astounding $5 million-plus invested in research. Be a part of the movement and help end cancer as we know it for everyone!
