American Cancer Society’s Sole Burner goes virtual; Community Foundation team walks together

Posted on Sep 3, 2020, by

The Community Foundation staff is teaming up to safely support the American Cancer Society. This year’s Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run is now a virtual event on or before September 12 to benefit the American Cancer Society. Megan participates in the virtual event with her dogs Peyton and Sissy.

Curt participated virtually on Wednesday, August 26.

What is a “virtual” race? This year’s annual Sole Burner is designed to keep runners and walkers safe amidst COVID-19. That means you or your team can choose the time and location for your 5K from now through September 12.

“You can run, jog, or walk on the road, treadmill, on a trail, at the gym, or on a track. You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself. It’s all on the honor system for a great cause,” says Cindy Sommer, American Cancer Society. “”The Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run is all about togetherness, but the safety of our patients, survivors, volunteers and staff is always a top priority.”

Many from the Community Foundation took an hour last week or this week to walk or run with our colleagues. We connected on our phones through Zoom, and chatted as we strode the trails and sidewalks of northeast Wisconsin.

Once runners and walkers complete their 5K, they submit the information by going to www.soleburner.org and receive a completion email and printable certificate.

Tammy was all smiles during her virtual run last week at Menominee Park in Oshkosh.

“During this difficult time, cancer won’t stop, and neither will we,” says Sommer. “Even though we cannot currently be face-to-face, we’re committed to continuing to fight cancer head-on and hope that you will stand together with us, even when we’re apart.”

There’s still time to be part of the Sole Burner 5K Walk/Run movement to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. The event is supported by a grant from the George & Gussie Balck and Art & Mary Leske Charitable Fund within the Community Foundation.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society to continue with cancer research, the 24/7 helpline, and for continuing services to get patients the care and support they need where we can.

Visit www.soleburner.org to register or for more information about this virtual event.
