It is said that volunteerism leads to philanthropy. Learning about all Harbor House Domestic Abuse Programs does to help its clients as a volunteer led Jan Lamers to see the need. Her volunteer work led her husband, McMAHON CEO Denny Lamers, to take up the cause.

McMAHON donated all of the architectural and engineering services for a $4 million expansion and renovation of the Appleton domestic abuse program center and Denny and Jan chaired the fund-raising drive. The new space will increase the number of bedrooms from 13 to 33 and the number of beds from 55 to 68 and add work and exam spaces. That configuration will improve Harbor House’s ability to serve families. The money had all been raised by the Sept. 6 groundbreaking. The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

For the company’s all-in response to Harbor House’s need — and as a result of Denny Lamers’ wisdom to listen to his wife — McMAHON and Harbor House were named this year’s recipients of the Business Partnership Award, sponsored by SECURA Insurance. The award carries a $5,000 contribution to Harbor House.  It is one of seven volunteer awards being presented at the annual Celebrating Volunteers community gala April 26 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton. The event is sponsored by the Community Foundation and The Post-Crescent.
