Fox Cities Reads picks story of racial intolerance

Three seventh-graders form Maplewood Middle School in Menasha ended the mystery by announcing this year’s book for Fox Cities Reads as Sharon Draper’s “Stella By Starlight.”

The book is the story of a girl in a small South Carolina town who battles prejudice when the Ku Klux Klan comes to town. Libraries across the Fox Cities will be offering the book and helping to encourage people to read it. This 11th annual Fox Cities Reads received a $2,500 Community Education grant from the Community Foundation.

Draper will speak at two public appearances — at UW-Fox Valley’s Perry Hall April 4 at 6:30 p.m. and at the Neenah Public Library at 2 p.m. April 5. She will also make numerous classroom appearances.

Listen to the three 7th-graders who announced the book explain why the rest of us should read it, too.
