From Brazilian drumming to Hmong dancing to jamming with a funk band, aspiring musicians will find just about anything among the educational offerings at Mile of Music in downtown Appleton.

A $7,500 grant from the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region to Lawrence University will help cover the cost of the educational workshops held during the original music festival Aug. 3-6. The free workshops are part of our Arts & Culture grant priority of making the arts accessible to children and youth. Workshops for all ages will be presented at locations throughout downtown. “From its inception, Mile of Music has invited everyone to participate in the joy of music-making,” Anna Simeth, associate director of corporate, foundation and research support at Lawrence, said. “Each year, the music team strives to find new and better ways to reach diverse groups in a celebration and exploration of music.”

This is the fifth year of Mile of Music. All five years have included educational activities supported by the Community Foundation. The music education team consists of faculty and students from Lawrence University and other area schools.

Several thousand of the 60,000 to 70,000 people who attended Mile of Music last year attended at least one educational event.
