Family Safety Day honors firefighter

Posted on Aug 29, 2017, by

The Grand Chute Fire Department is inviting the public to “Jesse Pickett Family Safety Day” Thursday, Sept. 9, at Fire Station One off County A. The event showcases the services of more than 25 partnering safety- and health-related organizations and agencies from throughout the Fox Valley.

Jesse Pickett was a Grand Chute firefighter and fire inspector. He died in an automobile crash  Dec. 8, 2013, at age 29. His wife, Misty, and two daughters survived the crash. The family used memorials and proceeds from fund-raising activities to establish a charitable fund within the Community Foundation. The Pickett Fire Safety and Community Fund provides needed fire fighting equipment to fire departments in northeast Wisconsin , distributes smoke detectors and assists disaster victims.

A $250 grant from the fund, supported by the family’s “Kick It for Pickett” kickball game, paid for supplies to create 250 first aid kits to be given out at the event.

Free on-site parking is available for the event. Hot dogs and popcorn also will be provided free of charge.

Those attending can see the “Jaws of Life” in action and learn hands-only CPR. Among the many other activities will be demonstrations and displays including a fire safety house, emergency vehicle displays, a junior firefighter obstacle challenge, fire extinguisher training, a bounce house and tethered hot air balloon rides.

A free shuttle bus from Badger Elementary School to Safety Day at Fire Station One will be provided at 10 a.m. 11 a.m and noon. Return trips from Fire Station One to Badger Elementary will be offered at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult to ride the shuttle.
