Houston foundation is safe way to give

Donations to assist hurricane victims in the Texas Gulf Coast can be made through a charitable fund the mayor of Houston has established with the Greater Houston Community Foundation.

Mayor Sylvester Turner established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax-deductible flood relief donations.

Moving almost as quickly as the flood relief crews are scammers looking to profit from the sympathies of donors for the flood victims. They are using Hurricane Harvey to trick people into clicking on links on Facebook and Twitter and in phishing emails trying to solicit charitable giving for the flood victims. Links may take potential donors to malware downloads or fake charities.

Houston’s certified community foundation is one of the reliable ways to donate to the proper relief efforts.

“We are getting calls from across the country and right here in our hometown, and the generosity of people who understand this disaster is truly amazing,” said Mayor Turner. “Together we can make a difference to those who will need extensive help to get back on their feet once this storm is over.”

Methods to donate include:
