When the members of the Infant Welfare Circle Grants Committee met on Nov. 21, they had six grant recommendations totaling $14,000, and they liked them all.

The requests included:

• CHAPS Academy – $3,000 for suicide prevention and intervention programs that involve young people working with horses as part of their counseling.
• Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Foundation – $3,000 for the hospital’s Child Advocacy Center in Neenah.
• COTS – $3,000 for Single Mothers with Young Children, part of the housing program for people transitioning out of homelessness.
• Fox Cities Building for the Arts – $2,500 for Young Audience: Fine Art Series at the Trout Museum of Art.
• Riverview Gardens – $1,500 for the Earn-A-Bike Program, which allows people to use time worked in the community garden to get a restored bicycle.
• Best Friends of Neenah-Menasha – $1,000 for After-School Mentoring.

All $14,000 worth of grant allocations sounded good to the four women on the committee. The problem was that the total they had available to allocate was $13,920.13. The money comes from the Infant Welfare Circle King’s Daughters Donor Advised Fund and the Infant Welfare Circle of King’s Daughters Jean & J. Treat Thomas Fund within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.

After a short deliberation, a motion was made and seconded to approve the entire $14,000 in grant awards. The committee members then dug into their wallets and contributed $20 each as a “pass-through” grant to cover the shortfall.

The 19 cents? That’s available for next year’s round of grant-making.
