A year ago, the area’s biggest provider of food to the hungry opened a regional distribution center in the Fox Cities.

Feeding America celebrated this morning with a small group of funding partners, including the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, at the facility at 2911 W. Evergreen Drive in Little Chute.

“The Fox Valley food bank has not only been a center of hope for our hunger relief partners, but also for the community at large,” Patti Habeck, executive vice president of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, said. “The families and individuals we serve in northeast Wisconsin have more access than ever before to nutritious food, and the community has a place where they can come together to work toward a hunger-free Wisconsin.”

An anonymous donor greatly helped the effort to build the distribution center by establishing the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin Fund with the Community Foundation with a gift of $1.5 million in stock.

Feeding America works with a network of more than 550 member organizations in 36 counties throughout eastern Wisconsin, including food pantries, soup kitchens, meal programs, emergency shelters, day care centers and senior centers. Each year, millions of pounds of food come through its disctribution centers in the Fox Cities and Milwaukee to be distributed to families and individuals facing hunger. Feeding America and the food pantries and other food distribution programs it partners with serve nearly 400,000 people each year, including 124,000 children and 41,000 seniors.
