The Community Foundation office
was donated by the Schmerein
family of Neenah
The Community Foundation’s office was itself a gift from generous donors. The Foundation lacked visibility and was running short on space at its former location above a downtown Appleton bank.
Mame Heaney, a member of a task force charged with identifying suitable office space, found a location that met the needs for ample meeting space, convenient parking, a central location and a professional appearance in a building owned by her family’s business, Schmerein Associates. The Neenah real estate investment group including Mame; her parents, Margaret and John D. Schmerein; and her brother, John G. Schmerein, donated about a third of the condominium office building to the Community Foundation.
In a quiet capital campaign, nearly 150 more donors contributed the $700,000 needed to remodel and furnish the 7,830-square-foot office. The Foundation completed the move in September 2004.
