What is the project?
Friends of
High Cliff has secured state support to purchase 40 acres to be added to
High Cliff State Park. A state grant to the Friends of High Cliff approved
by Gov. Jim Doyle Nov. 10 will pay $300,000 of the cost. The nonprofit
volunteer group has launched a fund-raising campaign to raise the $300,000
match needed to secure the final transactions.
The land is privately
owned but lies within the park boundaries. It will add valuable woods and
a section of the Niagara Escarpment to the second-busiest park in the
state park system. It also provides an important connection between
recreational trails. The High Cliff State Park Friends group, along with
the State of Wisconsin DNR, over the last few years has negotiated the
purchase of the land and has saved it from development.
The potential development
of this land greatly concerned all involved for the following reasons:
-
The land divides the park.
-
The land is up against the protected Niagara Escarpment feature.
-
The land is adjacent to a state-designated natural area.
- If
land were developed, houses, building, etc…would disturb / destroy the
serenity of the area.
-
The land would reduce the amount of green space in the park, which would
remove needed area for human health, recreation and nature.
